About TAA

The Text and Academic Authors Association is the only authoring association devoted exclusively to serving textbook and academic authors. TAA was established in 1987 for those interested in developing and publishing educational materials, including textbooks, articles for academic journals and other academic writing, software, videos, monographs, reference books, and multimedia CD-ROM disks. TAA's mission is to enhance the quality of educational materials and assist text and academic authors in matters involving them, including taxes, copyright, royalties and better appreciation of their work within the academic environment.

TAA is governed by a TAA Council made up of textbook and academic authors. Read a complete history of TAA here.

TAA is a voice for textbook and academic authors.

TAA developed a pamphlet entitled, "Stomp the Comp," that discourages faculty from selling complimentary copies to book resellers, a practice that is harmful to authors and contributes to the rising cost of textbooks. TAA has also written a position statement on the academic value of textbooks, a Code of Ethics for Authors, and a guide for authors in negotiating contracts with publishers.

TAA sponsors the following activities:

Academic Authoring Workshops. TAA sponsors workshops on college and university campuses across the country. These workshops are designed to assist academic authors in jump-starting their writing, getting their writing published, finishing their dissertations, and writing effective grant proposals.

Annual Conferences. Each year, TAA holds a conference on textbook and academic authoring as a way to educate textbook and academic authors on topics such as authoring scholarly journal articles, publishing a dissertation as a book, working with editors, indexing, legal issues surrounding copyright, negotiating contracts, textbook authoring, and the preparation of ancillary materials, as well as providing them with the opportunity to network with each other. Visit the 2008 TAA Conference on Text and Academic Authoring website: Click here

Awards. Each year, TAA recognizes the best new textbooks with its Textbook Excellence Awards ("Textys"), and the textbooks that have shown the greatest longevity with its McGuffey Longevity Awards ("McGuffeys"). TAA also recognizes the most cited academic articles and monographs with its Garfield Citation Awards. More awards info: Click here

"I'm learning so much from the TAA Listserv and the website. I'm so glad I found TAA." — Kimberly A. Davies, author of The Murder Book: Examining Homicide. Read her Featured Member Profile in Busy TAA People

Betty Azar, author of the bestselling Azar Grammar Series

"I am a member of TAA because I think there is a need for an organization that provides information and services for academic authors. I want to do what I can to help support other authors. Plus TAA is a source I can go to when I need insight into certain business aspects of contracts and publishing. I believe that the more authors share information about contract negotiations, the stronger authors become as a group. The publishers do try to hold all the cards when it comes to contracts. I also like getting bits of information about the publishing industry -- and ideas about where publishing might be going in the next twenty years. TAA, in these things and many others, provides a real service for authors."
— Betty Azar, author of the bestselling Azar Grammar Series

"I joined the TAA after attending Tara Gray's informative workshop 'Publish and Flourish' last June. Since then, I have published three articles in peer-reviewed journals. I just wanted to acknowledge that I wouldn't have accomplished that without her help." — Victoria A. Malko, Ed.D., California State University, Fresno

"TAA teleconferences give much value to being a TAA member. I also like the information available on the TAA website, especially the contract information." — Ricardo D. Fierro, Ph.D., Department of Mathematics, California State University San Marcos
