Holt, Rinehart
and Winston Launch New Spanish Curriculum
Expresate employs
instructional and multisensory learning techniques that connect students
to Spanish-speaking countries, their arts, culture and people, while
teaching them to converse in Spanish. The company consulted a team of
instructional design experts and classroom teachers when creating Expresate.
Holt video staff traveled over 40,000 miles around the world to collect
video, photographs, and audio accounts of Spanish life, which were developed
into a full complement of visual and audio supplementary materials to
further immersion in Spanish culture. Many of these visual and audio
components are integrated into the online textbook version of Expresate
and all are available on VHS, DVD or CD-ROMs. Expresate is available
in Levels 1, 2 and 3 for high-school grades and Levels 1A and 1B for
middle school grades.

Texas Defines
Marriage for the Entire Country?
When the Texas Board
of Education said they would only approve Holt, Rinehart and Winston
and Glencoe/McGraw Hill middle and high school health textbooks for
adoption if they defined marriage as between a man and a woman, they
may have defined marriage for the entire country. Texas's argument for
the change was that it follows a Texas law that defines marriage as
being between a man and a woman. Since Texas is one of the largest textbook
adopters in the country, publishers tend to want to make them happy.
But Texas's demands may cause the rest of the country to have to use
the textbooks whether they agree with the wording or not unless publishers
print an unedited version for non-Texans.
